The Color your day class with Altenew got me stumped. One would think that anything about color to an artist would not be a problem. Well, this one got me. I do not think it was the color that scared me but the products I wanted to use. I was really hoping to use the Oriental Poppy stamp set from Altenew but I did not like how it was colored even with the stencils. I just did not have what I thought were complimentary colors to go with the stencils. We will get into that later. First, let me tell you about the class.
The class gave you several different ways to pick your colors.
- A picture as your inspiration
- A traditional Color Wheel
- 70/20/10 amounts of color as a guide.
I choose to use a website color wheel to get my colors. There are several available. I am sure there is even an app. If you are familiar with InkScape there is one in there as well. I looked up two.
I used the HTML one for my color choices in the cards I did. I wanted to use a picture or export but sadly it would not let me.
My original thought was to use the Oriental Poppy from Altenew. I tried the stencils. I did not have colors that were complimentary enough for me. So I decided to watercolor the flowers. I was not happy with how they turned out that way either. So I ended up doing the watercolors with a bit of teaching from a friend. I love the way these three turned out. The last one with the Echinacea is not my favorite but it was the first one I tried. These inspired me so much that I joined the Paint a Flower subscription. If you have not checked that out might I suggest you do? A nice surprise every month. Happy Dance over here.
I used the color wheel for all of these cards. I found complimentary, analogous, or shades of colors that would work well together. What a great tool and defiantly helps with what color to choose.

Paint-a-flower stamps are a great way to keep coloring and practicing. In this way, each month you will be kind of forced to try out that brand new stamp and practice watercolor. Don’t overthink and stay relaxed while coloring to enjoy it more 🙂
Thank you for submitting your work to the AECP assignment gallery.
