Hello Everyone, today I will show you some quick watercolor techniques that I learned in the Stunningly Simple Water Coloring Techniques class by Altenew. Some of these techniques are not really new to me, but they are a great reminder of how to do them with a different explanation. So even when you think you know how to do it watching someone else gives you clues and techniques that help your process become much stronger in the end.
I have created two cards today, I also did a few other watercolor techniques that I have not done anything with yet. I am still pondering what to do with them.
Let’s start with those first.
The first one is a smooching technique. I had done it before but learned in this class that the more water you have the better your result is. That is if you are going for a smooth transition of color. Like the one below.
However, if you do not add enough water to the smooshed ink you will get this result. Not that it is a bad thing it just depends on what you want your final project to look like. I used the Iceland Poppies from the Paint a Flower subscription for November 2022.
The other technique that I have not done anything with is Faux smooching/Dropping in Color. I see so many things that I could do with this one. The night sky with a moon. This is what was done in the demonstration. However, I try to go with something other than what was done as the demonstration. I also see a snowy skyscape. So I have not decided where I will go with this one.
Dropping dark blue and purple colors from the 36-pan watercolor set on a very wet piece of watercolor paper. I also added some metallic colors from the metallic watercolor set. I love the sparkle and shine.
The cards I finished below I did twice. YES, it is almost the same as the card from the demonstration. I was absolutely in love with the color combo. I have created 4 or five of these flowers from the Golden days stamp set instead of the Beautiful Day stamp set. I did do my leaves a bit differently where I stamped them in a dark blue and used my wet paintbrush to make the color bleed out just a bit. Making the leaves look full.
This card is done with white embossing powder for the stamped flower image. This is a cool way to keep the water contained where you want it to be. I love this idea. It was the first one I did to practice.
This one is done with a no-line watercolor effect. I stamped the flower in Chipped Sapphire then colored in the leaves with the Pickled Rasberry and Chipped Sapphire inks and of course a clean paintbrush. This one is a bit harder to do. You need to be careful not to do the petal next to one that is wet. This would make for a muddy mess of color. The center of this flower is colored in with Castle Art colored pencils.
Each of these cards was finished off a bit differently but I love the results.
The final technique combines two Ombre Backgrounds and Watercoloring solid imaged stamps. Although my trees were not solid images I used water to create the foliage from the stamp. Then added some tree bark watercolor markers for the branches. I did not want this card to be too busy so I went simple and clean. After allowing my card to dry completely I embossed the sentiment and layered it with a basic black piece of cardstock. My Trees are from Stampin Up!’s Grassy Grove stamp set.
I hope you enjoyed the cards today. I can not wait to show you next week’s class.
Happy Crafting,
Amy
